Westminster Invitational 2015

Ready for action!

Ready for action!

The golf course was kind enough to give us our own space for a tailgate right at the turn!

Although the weather threatened us early, the worst of it was a bit of thunder without lightning, so we were able to play without interruption.

We enjoyed not only the weather, as it turned out quite nice by the end of the day, but also the scenery.

Oh yeah!

Oh yeah!

Special thanks to Chris and Charles for cooking us up a feast… pork chops, Mexican street corn, and smoked potatoes!!

Kudos to our scramble winners, Ben Hailey, Scott Bennett, Derek Merritt, and Tucker Gallagher! Congratulations also go out to Longest Drive winner Scott Bennett and Closest to the Pin winner Brandon Spears. Well done guys!

Don’t forget! The 2nd annual WPC Golf Invitational is coming up on May 9th. Let Mike McDonald (mikiemcd@mac.com, 979-777-4818) know if you are interested in playing. Please invite friends from outside WPC as well! We want this to be an opportunity to introduce others in our community to WPC in a non-threatening, informal way.

On to the better stuff:

“We not only do unhealthy things, we do sinful things when faced with pressure.”
Some paraphrasing here, but lots of good stuff:
Abraham’s desire to protect himself put a lot of people around him in danger. It wasn’t the world’s sin that put Abraham in danger – Abraham’s sin puts the world in danger. Sometimes when we sin, self-protect, and live untrusting in God’s truths, we are a threat to our neighbor.
God intervenes with Abimilech first: “It is only my grace that you haven’t done this awful thing.”
The central question of the text is in vs 10: “Abraham, what did you see? What were you looking at?” Abraham’s answers reveal his heart, full of faith and full of failure:
-There is no fear of God in this place (doubting God’s sovereignty)
-Because Sarah is technically my sister (shaping and spinning facts, withholding truth)
-We’ve always done it this way

Why do we spin facts? We are scared, and our hearts’ first reaction is to protect ourselves. It is always a good idea when God intervenes for us, but it’s NEVER a good idea when we intervene for God.
Are you ever scared? Do you self protect? Do you live as if God is not sovereign in certain situations? Do you spin facts to protect yourself? Do you do it because you’ve always done it this way?

-Ben H.

This Saturday is The WPC Men’s Breakfast Open! We’ll be meeting at the church at 7:30 am for a quick breakfast and speaker, then shuttling over to Briarcrest CC to check in for golf! The church is contributing half the cost, so your cost will be $26.50, payable when we check in. This includes range balls, green fees, and a cart. We’ll have a shotgun start at 9am, so expect to finish around 1pm. Lunch will be available at the clubhouse for purchase if you want to stick around and eat together afterwards. Look forward to seeing y’all there!!

Softball update

Men,
The Standards’ softball game tonight has been cancelled! If you were planning to attend, maybe you should stay home and build a fire instead.  🙂  The game has been rescheduled for April 14th at 8:15pm.

Spring Softball Gets Underway

Softball season is underway, but unfortunately, it’s not looking good for our heroes. Two games into the spring season, the Westminster Standards are 0-2, and enter week 3’s matchup still looking for their first win.

Entering the season hopeful, expectations of an undefeated season were quickly put to rest by an 11-0 drubbing in the first game. The Standards’ best scoring chance came in the 3rd inning, when they had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, but ultimately came up short thanks to a bungled squeeze-play worsened by a base running gaffe which ended in the first triple play of the season. In his post game press conference, Standards’ head coach Jeremy Tatro commented, “I think the season snuck up on us a bit. After having an extremely long off-season [due to the strike-shortened 2013 campaign which was immediately followed by a prolonged player lockout], we just got lulled into the habit of not playing.”

Hope is not lost for the Standards, however, as the team did show marked improvement in their latest contest, and in fact started fast with an early 9-0 lead entering the 3rd frame. Unfortunately, after giving up an 11-run 4th inning, the wind was taken out of the Standards’ sails, and they fought hard but came up short, with a final score of 19-14. In the parking lot after the game, cleanup hitter Andrew Gronberg was overheard to say, “I’m not crying. A bug got in my eye, that’s all.”

In an effort to drum up more support, the Standards are turning to freebies and give-aways to get more people in the stands this season.  The latest rumors suggest they will be offering free copies of The Westminster Confession of Faith to the first 3 fans to arrive. Be sure to get there early to secure your copy! The Standards will take to the field again on Monday, March 3rd, at 8:15pm at Veterans’ Park in College Station.
